NEW PERSPECTIVES

Dear Friends, Fellow Art and Color Lovers,

 

After slowed down activity at the studio, I am back at it (or at least in spirits :D), with lots that my eyes witnessed:

 

Last months were about exploring new cultures and bring more inspiration in the studio by a first ever exposure to the magnificent country that India is!

 

I have always been drawn to Indian textile knowledge as well as their dyeing techniques. And my first inspirational stop was Jaipur, Rajasthan 🀩 also called β€œThe Pink City” (just like Toulouse, where I studied).

 

Jaipur is known for its unique block printing technique and trust that it is quite exquisite. 

 

I am so grateful to have had the Mughal Crafts & Textiles Studios opening their doors to me to showcase their talents and I am thrilled to be able to share this with you.

BLOCK-PRINTING

So what is block printing you say?

Block print consists in designs carved on wooden blocks with precision, and these blocks are then dipped in dye to print the design onto fabric. What’s really interesting about traditional hand block printing designs is that each pattern you see is repeatedly and one by one pressed on the receiving surface with a perfect placement.

For over 500 years block printing has been practiced in Rajasthan, India. Although the history of this technique goes back to the 12th century when this craft was only to be accessed to King and Queens.

The tradition followed by the locals is to pass down handblock printing techniques to their children as a legacy and so far the knowledge was able to pertain the advancement and competitions of the textile industry.

This technique particularly intrigued me because I tend to use a lot of organic scrap random pressing steps in my works. Although I really enjoyed watching Abil at the Mughal Crafts & textiles Studios, meticulously press the pattern mechanically and was amazed by his precision and speed. 

Another point of interest in the process was the origin of the… …colors, you guess it!

Mughal Studios uses natural dyes with greens created from mango and spinach leaves, blue from indigo. Whereas reds are obtained from pomegranate, madder, and yellows from turmeric and saffron.

 

It was fascinating to note the symbolic of each color as well. 

Yellow in general represents knowledge, learning and Saffron yellow specifically being a sacred color in Hinduism reflecting the fire that burns impurities and cleanse. Therefore, it’s worn by wise figures in quest of light, like monks for example. Greens are often associated with new beginnings and happiness. 

Many Hindu Gods, such as Vishnu, are represented with blue skin, in this case, symbolizing Vishnu’s associations with sea and sky.
