Happy Blood Moon Total Lunar Eclipse!

Tonight, as the Earth’s shadow casts a crimson glow over the moon, we witness a celestial transformation, one of color, light, and impermanence. It feels like the perfect moment to introduce “Celestial Fragments”, a collection shaped by similar cycles of change, memory, and renewal of what we leave behind.

Each month, we uncover the artistic and healing potential of a plant, flower, or food waste, revealing the magic it holds in our creative practice.

This March, I invite you to take a closer look at hibiscus, a vibrant material full of surprises. Just as the moon deepens into rich reds and dusky purples during an eclipse, hibiscus bleeds its inky violets, deep burgundies, and soft blush hues when rehydrated into dye. And like the moon’s cycle, hibiscus shifts through states, fluid when extracted, fossilized when dried, preserving the traces of its past life.

Most know hibiscus for its tart, ruby-red tea, but this flower’s journey doesn’t have to just end in a teacup. In my practice lately, I have reclaimed hibiscus tea scraps from local cafés, transforming their deep pigments into natural dyes that breathe new life into textiles. People drink hibiscus tea, well, so do my fabrics. 😉

Hibiscus: A Color Alchemist

Beyond its rich dyeing properties, hibiscus carries soothing botanical benefits, often used in skincare infusions for hydration and antioxidants. But what captivates me most is its fleeting yet permanent nature: the way it blooms in water, releases its essence, and then solidifies again as the dye sets, almost like petrified light.

From inky purples and moody mauves to warm, earthen browns, hibiscus waste tells a story of ephemerality and permanence: a perfect metaphor for the interplay of color and time.

So, as we step into this eclipsed night, let’s celebrate the hidden vibrancy in what we discard, the artistry of transformation, and the infinite cycles of renewal, both in the cosmos and in our creative process.
